Nobile Returns From Polar Flight Amid Ice and Wind
May 24 report from King's Bay notes strong head winds and dense fog as the Italia heads back from the North Pole to Spitzbergen. Nobile, after a historic second dirigible flight, sent messages to Pope Pius XII and to King Victor Emmanuel and Premier Mussolini. A six foot cross bearing a Latin inscription from Pope Pius was dropped at the pole, and flags of Italy and Milan marked the event.
