Unprecedented GM UAW five year contract shocks labor world

Detroit May 23 General Motors and the CIO United Auto Workers signed a five year contract described as unprecedented by UAW President Walter Reuther. The deal grants a four cent hourly wage rise each year plus pensions of 100 dollars monthly and other benefits while preserving a cost of living wage formula. The union concedes to the five year term with no wage reopening and pensions tied to federal benefits. The agreement awaits GM and UAW conference approvals and rank and file votes. A strike threat had arisen earlier but negotiations proceeded with surprise speed.
