Noted Colored Preacher Arrested in Philadelphia
Rev. Dr. H. C. C. Astwood of Bridge Sires A M E church Brooklyn was found guilty of misapplying church funds insubordination and conduct unbecoming a minister at the Philadelphia conference. He was arrested by a Harrisonburg detective on a charge of debarding a boarding house keeper in August 1899 after the verdict. Astwood, who served seven years as United States coast to San Domingo, is described as a prominent colored man.

Electric Railway Halted in Avoca by Court Injunction

Springfield Wis May 24 Former Governor John Riley Tanner died suddenly yesterday afternoon at the Leland hotel in this city from rheumatism of the heart. He had returned from Chicago with rheumatism and grew worse. Dr Dixon reported him beyond aid at 2 30 pm. Tanner served as Illinois governor and held multiple positions including state treasurer U S marshal and sub treasury official. he was a Civil War veteran and 37 years old.
