Sawyer Wins Contempt Stay In Steamship Line Case
Washington May 22 The secretary of commerce Sawyer and eight associates won a last minute stay in their bid to keep government control of the 68 million dollar American President Lines. Dollar interests win appeal over 92 percent voting stock
The text notes a 1930s dispute over control of a line's voting stock with Sawyer directed to hold 92 percent. The Justice Department claims government title to the stock, saying it was surrendered for a loan to Dollar interests in 1938. The Dollar group says the stock was collateral and the loan repaid, seeking return. The Court of Appeals favored the Dollar interests, triggering contempt proceedings to enforce that ruling.
