New York May 22 The Metropolitan Bank is paying deposits and liquidating balances in the clearing house as other banks do. Its indebtedness to the clearing house is about 200000. There is no current plan by the bank's president or directors to wind up the affairs.
The Sciota river bridge at Portsmouth University fell at 11 am while a herd of cattle crossed. The twenty year old structure was deemed unsafe. Mrs Walter Fullwiler and three children were on the span. Two children, aged two and four months, drowned. the six year old was saved. William Barr, a cattle driver, was rescued after sinking. The bridge cost forty thousand dollars.
On May 22 a tramp entered Mr. Coulter’s tenant house three miles from the brick meeting-house and assaulted his wife with an axe after being refused victuals. The woman lay unconscious with a severe head wound. the tramp fled and no arrests were reported.
Reports from Nassau Florida May 22 indicate Castro left Nassau for Jamaica. Cubans claim he joined Aguero, with Nassau plot believed Fenian. Bahamas governor once Irish magistrate. documents found on a drowned body reveal plans to destroy the government palace and an infernal machine discovered.

He notes capitalists are eager to acquire securities at current levels and believes the troubles may be behind us. A bank officer he spoke with says there is nothing to fear from associated banks and the outlook grows brighter each day.
In Cuotumaus Mississippi on May 21 Robert Spiers a telephone manager was accidentally shot and killed by A B Meek during a playful pistol display in Spiers office. They were longtime friends and had been firing at a mark before skylarking when Meek’s pistol discharged the ball passed through Spiers head. He claims he believed all chambers were empty and had no idea a round remained.
J M Wagner railroad agent at Pine Village North of Attica was attacked by three tramps. A coat was thrown over his head and he was robbed of 83. The struggle left a shallow throat gash but non serious. The tramps escaped.
A handsome B&O sleeping coach freshly outfitted for the Maryland Republican delegation to Chicago. They will depart Camden Station on Saturday evening, May 31, and arrive in Chicago early Monday morning.
The late Tom Thumb residence in Bridgeport sold Tuesday for 4500, its value dropped by a nearby jail build. J G Carlisle says he has no objection to his name being used for a Greenback nomination. Transatlantic steamers Aurania Austral and Arizona left Queenstown last Sunday and are wagers to race across the ocean.
The famous horse ridden by General Custer in his Indian campaigns died last night in Wixcexxes Ixp. The animal belonged to Dr. Carver the marksman and was kept at his estate.
A close contest in Philadelphia on May 21 featured the Boston and Philadelphia clubs. Boston won 2 to 1 in an evenly matched game with tight pitching and late-inning drama.
Philadelphia police received a telegram from Baltimore seeking two men who swindled Maricia Friaca of $5000 and a gold watch. The suspects described as a medium build man with dark facial hair and a tall heavy man. they presented a block of metal claimed to be $13,000 worth gold, saying it came from a mountain stage coach robbery two years ago. Friaca paid $5000 and his watch for the brick, which was plated with gold.
The Bicycle Championship in Wasmixetox on May 22 states that Prince Higham Woodside and Morgan, champions of the United States England Ireland and Canada, have agreed to ride a ten mile race at Athletic Park for 900 dollars and the world championship. If the best professional record for the distance 31 49 is beaten, the winner earns an extra 100 dollars.
