Maryland Tobacco Suit Narrowed as Judge Dismisses Third-Party Claims
A Baltimore circuit judge trimmed Maryland’s tobacco case, allowing claims on consumer protection and antitrust grounds while dismissing the state’s bid to seek damages for third parties harmed by smoking. The ruling leaves the state able to pursue Medicaid cost recovery via subrogation, with smokers named and proven to have smoked and suffered related illnesses caused by smoking.
