Use of Nationalists in China War Sparks Senate Debate

General Omer Bradley told Senate committees there is no military objection to Chinese Nationalist troops harassing Red China from Formosa as long as American forces stay out. He warned Nationalist use could risk Formosa security and suggested now is not the time. He opposed MacArthur's plan to employ Chiang Kai-shek's forces and urged strengthening Europe and continuing limited war in Korea. He noted no rift with the administration, but said MacArthur was removed for not supporting joint war plans and civilian control of the armed forces. Bradley said from a military view there is no clear case for using Formosa troops now.
