AP reports a heated gun control fight shifts to the House after a spate of teen shootings. A Senate vote backed tougher handgun restrictions as part of a juvenile crime package, while House leadership clash over floor timing. Speaker Dennis Hastert signaled bringing a bill to curb youth violence to the floor.
The Senate passed tighter gun limits amid hearings by the Judiciary Committee. In a floor speech Speaker Hastert indicated possible further proposals but cautioned the House may not accept all Senate provisions. House Democrats urged floor debate next week, while Rep. John Conyers, ranking Democrat, weighed options.
Frederick aldermen awarded a $7 620 contract to Johnson Towers Inc of New Jersey to rebuild the city truck engine, rejecting a recommendation to award Grimes Truck Center. The vote was 5 to 0 as part of consent items with no discussion.
Aldermen voted 4 to 1 Thursday to create the Monocacy Boulevard Special Tax District, a 341 acre zone along the boulevard to fund bonds for the boulevard extension. The plan imposes a property tax on new businesses within the district and may add taxes if needed. Alderman Donna Kuzemchak opposed, saying the financing is inappropriate for the road. Alderman Joseph Baldi asked whether banks could issue the bonds.
About 400 students, including Yimei Zendle age 54, earned associate degrees or certificates at FCC graduation in a packed gym. Zendle vows a new path after a medical research career while peers like Mary Claire Krager expect new roles in surgical tech and general studies. Principal remarks praise the average 34 year old class with work and family duties and a call to civic involvement.
The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland began its 215th annual convention Thursday at the Francis Scott Key Holiday Inn in Frederick with about 450 attendees including clergy lay delegates and diocesan staff. The event features displays on aging homelessness youth and housing, along with vendors. remarks by Rt Rev Barbara Harris and Rt Rev Robert Ihioff focus on renewal and ministry. a focus on renewing Claggett Conference Center in Buckeystown marks its centennial, with new educational retreat facilities.
The Reinberger Award from the Frederick County Family Life Center was presented to Fran and Joe Baker at a Thursday night dinner. Attending were Barbara Brittain executive director Jim Plamondon president Mr and Mrs Baker and Rita and Paul Gordon honorary co chairmen of the event. See story on page A-4.
A three year grant totaling 223660 dollars annually will fund one on one reading tutoring in six Frederick elementary schools this fall. AmeriCorps members and volunteers will partner with Frederick County Public Schools Frederick Community College and Community in Schools to create the Frederick Reads program pending approval by the Frederick County Board of Education.
