Frederick City Crime Report Shows 1.9 Percent Rise in 1986

Frederick City Police Chief Richard J. Ashton released the 1986 annual report noting a 1.9 percent overall crime rise amid national and state increases. DWI arrests climbed 12 percent to 426, the most in department history, while five fatal crashes ended a two year no death streak. Drug arrests rose 20 percent to 144 with ties to All Saints Street. False alarms totaled 2,049, costing taxpayers over $11,200 and prompting concern after a Washington DC burglary death of an officer.

Opposition mounts to quarry rezoning

In Adamstown a large turnout of merchants developers and politicians joined a fight against rezoning over 600 acres near Ballenger Creek for limestone mining. More than 125 citizens packed Trinity United Church of Christ to hear about allies and tactics including a planned petition and letters to Frederick County officials.

Frederick County teachers vote to work to rule at meeting

About 1,000 educators from seven high schools and feeder schools approved work to rule and a 10 member crisis committee after a Frederick High School gathering. They will limit activities to contract hours, stage daily public demonstrations at Winchester Hall from May 26 to June 3, and consider a sick-out amid budget tensions with the county commissioners.
