House Passes Housing Bill Wins Democratic Victory
The House approved a large housing bill by 261 to 166 amid vigorous debate. Democrats backed the measure, while Republicans pressed to remove public housing and cut funding. The vote set the stage for Senate consideration and a possible presidential veto battle.
Housing Bill Proposes Large FHA Increases and New Units
The measure includes a three year program for slum redevelopment, 400 million for college housing loans, 106 million for elderly housing and lower Federal Housing Administration payments. It would raise FHA mortgage insurance by 19 billion and authorize 35 600 new government subsidized low rent units annually for four years totaling 340 000. The House also rejected to repeal tax exemptions on local housing bond issues and blocked an anti discrimination amendment in public housing. Frederick Branch M.S.
