Absentee Voting Urged by Maryland League
The Maryland League of Women Voters urged emergency action in 1956 to permit absentee voting for civilians in the primary and general elections. The group noted public support and pointed to existing authority in 1954 while criticizing the Senate for letting related legislation die in committee. It urged the Legislative Council and Senate president to designate the measure as emergency legislation for the 1956 session, so ill or absent voters can participate. The league also adopted a 12 point program including continuing responsibilities and elected new officers led by Mrs. William H. Wood.
