WLB Approves Coal Mines Wage Schedule and Travel Time

The War Labor Board approved the wage agreement for the soft coal industry ending a year of controversy and four major strikes. It shifts contract obligations from the Interior Department to operators, enabling possible withdrawal of government control. The decision does not settle all disputes as the Southern Coal Operators Association is not party to the agreement and disputes the $40 retroactive travel time payment. The nine hour portal to portal workday increases production time by an hour daily, with 15 minutes lunch unpaid and 45 minutes allotted travel time. miners readjust wages from seven to nine hours.
