Joseph Jefferson, veteran stage actor, has begun his sixtieth theatrical season. He began performing seventy one years ago as a child of three and remains active and energetic in recent years, continuing to engage in painting and other pursuits.
The 13th annual United Confederate Veterans reunion opened in New Orleans with General John B. Gordon presiding despite illness. Thousands cheered as Gordon entered, later introducing Mrs Stonewall Jackson and presenting Julia Jackson Christian amid waves of loyalty and Southern pageantry.
Manila reports William Ballon a private in the Fifteenth Cavalry alone checked a second rush by insurgents at Suedlatan Mindanao on May 15 he defended the American dead and wounded. Captain Clough Overton and Private Harry Noyes were killed and Private Harlow wounded by 50 insurgents. Ballon was not wounded. Lieutenant Walker of the constabulary was killed and two privates also killed with three captured. One escaped.
In Madison Florida on May 20 a mob seized the jail keys, dragged Washington Jarvis from custody, tied him to a tree, and shot him to death. Jarvis, accused of murdering his cousin John Waldrop, was killed after the night watchman was blindfolded. The tree has a grim history marked by prior killings and graves nearby. no lynchers identified yet amidst great excitement.
A runaway trolley car derailed into a freight train in Chicago injuring several persons. In Horton Kansas a tornado damaged many buildings and injured two. Engle an elderly farm laborer killed himself by hanging in a barn in Marietta Pennsylvania. Frank P Liamcy of Vermont named umpire for Great Britain and the Netherlands in Caracas arbitration. Southport National Bank of Southport Connecticut closed due to cashier defalcation of 100000.
May 20 real Fallk Montana reports terrible snow storm last three days causing five million dollars in cattle and sheep losses. At least three herders frozen to death, others missing or fled to ranches. A shipment of 600 cattle bound for Havrenna wiped out, leaving only about a dozen survivors.
A Wytheville dispatch reports fourteen buildings in Max Meadows Wythe County on the Norfolk and Western main line destroyed by fire originated in a stable from smoking. Loss about 75000 dollars, with some insurance. Major losses include Hesser's drug store Mrs Bridges residence H J Shaffer store Odd Fellows Hall and Max Meadows Land Co office.
