Senators advance plan for national health insurance
Four senior members of the Senate Finance Committee push a bill replacing the existing Medicaid approach with a government funded benefits system. It would cover nearly all medical expenses for families under the poverty line and cap major costs above $2,000 annually for those above poverty. Employers would pay a penny per $2 in wages to fund the plan, with optional private coverage. The draft, led by Sen. Russell Long and colleagues, targets expansion beyond present costs and faces funding debates as about 18 million Americans lack health insurance.
