Endorsement Delayed by Americans for Democratic Action
Americans for Democratic Action voted unanimously to delay endorsing any presidential candidate until after the midyear party nominating conventions in Chicago. The voice vote followed a stormy session with delegates criticizing Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Sen. Robert A. Taft. Supporters included Sen. Estes Kefauver, Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson, and W. Averell Harriman. Stevenson appeared to have the strongest floor support among 692 delegates at the annual AFL Roosevelt-era group meeting.

Francis Biddle apologized for implying ADA is a Democratic Party adjunct and said the doors are open to Republicans who share their views. James Wechsler criticized Eisenhower coverage after a New York delegate booed Stevenson supporter. Stevenson says he does not want the nomination but hasn’t ruled out a draft, while “Old Guard” denotes conservative Republicans.
