London May 19 The government knew of Irish uprising plans aided by Germany but hesitated to act for fear of bloodshed. Sir Matthew Nathan testified to a royal commission detailing armed volunteers, sham attacks on Dublin Castle, and efforts to land arms from German submarines. He noted Irish leaders Redmond Dillon and Doulin communicated but no disarmament occurred to avoid triggering bloodshed.
Senator Jacob H. Gallinger of New Hampshire opposed President Wilson's nomination of George Rubles for the federal trade commission for fifteen months calling the seminee personally obnoxious to him, fueling a bitter Senate battle over the appointment.
