Frederick County Commissioners hold tax rate at 2.26

The Frederick County Commissioners voted 4-0 to keep the property tax assessment at $2.26 per $100 of appraised value for the 1996 fiscal year, with David Gray absent, marking the second straight year of no rate change. County teachers union leader Jack Patterson criticized the decision as he urged more education funding after the board kept the school budget at 98.7 million.

BoE appoints administrator to lead Frederick curriculum

Montgomery County administrator Dr Elizabeth Morgan was chosen to become associate superintendent of curriculum and instructional services in Frederick County schools. She will assume the post in July to fill the vacancy created when Dr Kevin Castner left for Albemarle County. Morgan leads school administration for a 117000 student system and was among seven candidates after 35 applications. Her doctorate is from American University and she has prior experience as an elementary principal. She lives in Myersville and has a daughter in Myersville Elementary.

Undercover North Market arrests target street vice

Frederick police say a planned undercover operation on North Market Street led to two arrests on Tuesday. Kimberly Sue Smith 26 of Thurmont was charged with solicitation for prostitution and lewdness while Tammy Diana Johnson 29 with no fixed address faced a fourth degree sex offense charge after grabbing an officer. The operation followed community complaints about prostitution and drug dealing in the Fourth to Sixth Street corridor.

County Elder Expo brings information and fun to seniors

Hundreds of Frederick County seniors danced sang and explored the third annual Elder Expo at the Francis Scott Key Holiday Inn. Forty five agencies staffed booths offering equipment financial and legal services volunteer opportunities and hospice care along with line dancing singing by the Catoctin Canaries and bingo. Attendees said the event was productive with a younger and more informed crowd and many came to gather information for parents. Frederick Memorial Hospital highlighted free blood pressure testing medical equipment brochures and hospice care as part of its large exhibit.

House panel moves to deregulate cable rates nationwide
