Quiet VIP Parking Signs Hide Free Airport Lots

Congress members still have free reserved parking at Washington airports, but new “Restricted Parking Authorized Users Only” signs replace notices that named the VIP lots for Supreme Court Justices, Members of Congress, and the Diplomatic Corps. Senator John McCain criticized the change after an unsuccessful bid to open the area to public parking. Ron M. Linton, head of the airports authority, suggested the signs reflect a desire to keep the public from knowing who is excluded.

The mine, valued at 8 to 10 billion dollars, was purchased for 62 million in 1987 and is now owned by Barrick after a court-ordered transfer. Critics call the sale a major ripoff and urge reform of the century‑old law to protect revenues and jobs.
