NBC announces a summer radio cycle featuring 20 Pulitzer plays on WJZ NBC stations starting June 2, with "Craig's Wife" by George Kelly as opener. The series will use regular actors and staff, originating from New York, and includes titles such as "Strange Interlude" and "Both Your Houses" across Thursday nights for about three months.
In Chicago area approx 91 000 relief recipients were cut from lists as funds neared exhaustion and planned to close relief stations by tomorrow night. Lyons said state action is needed to alleviate distress, with supplies to be provided by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation.
Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland filed suit against National Surety Company and Lester S. Birely, former Thurmont bank head, in Equity Court. By counsel Francis Key Murray the case was dismissed amid report of a settlement. Amount involved was 4500 dollars. Represented for the surety company were Jesse Slingluff Jr, G Van V Wolf, and Marbury, Gosnell and Williams.
Bunter W. Tabscott of Woodsboro failed to appear for Monday morning’s People's Court hearing on charges of failing to stop after an accident and reckless driving. He forfeited $25 collateral. Corp. W. K. May of State Police reported an accident on Bentz street Saturday in which a car driven by Tabscott allegedly struck a parked car.
Washington reports indicate efforts to revive President Roosevelt's defeated government reorganization bill were balked, with House leaders urging Senate action while White House discussions suggested a passage would please the President. Rep. Rayburn stated the President did not press Congress to act before adjournment.
Laytonsville and surrounding areas report a flurry of hospitality and visits. Guests include Mrs. Martha Throckmorton and Mrs. Ann Jeffers at Pleasant View Farm for bridal party events, plus visitors from Baltimore Annapolis Chevy Chase and Gaithersburg. A Canadian artist is credited with painting the world’s smallest portrait on bloodstone, one-eighth inch long, using a camel hair brush.
The Balenger Women's Club held a piano recital at Fea gaville schoolhouse on Tuesday evening May 10 at 8 directed by Mrs. N E Conway Brunswick music instructor and featured a club playlet And The Dortoce Said by Eben M Gall. The program listed multiple piano solos readings duets and a Tales of Hoffman number with several participants including Kathing Troutunshine Jean Everhart Patsy Keller Lillian Easterday Creta Everhart Irene House Louise Culler and others with Miss Anna Marie Young performing vocal pieces and Mrs Conway at the piano. The club presented And The Doctor Said with a cast of members portraying many named characters.
London reports a justice ruled that fire engines and ambulances do not have automatic right of way at traffic lights. He awarded $17,500 damages to a man injured when a car he rode in collided with a fire truck. If the light turns red they must wait like other vehicles, a few seconds at most.
Pollen grains were detected in the air during the spring season thirteen miles from their flowering trees.
Three carloads of equipment from George F Hazelwood Company were moved to Hancock to begin erecting a new bridge over the Potomac River at Point of Rocks. George Wian, superintendent, oversaw the transfer. The Hancock bridge contract was initially awarded to a Pennsylvania firm but later reawarded to Hazelwood. Concrete approaches are under construction on the Maryland side by M J Grove Lime Company, with 700 to 300 yards of roadwork, a 20 foot width, and a drain pipe being installed. Virginia side approaches are completed and new road construction progresses toward the bridge.
The February grand jury met in special session but did not return indictments on Monday. State's Attorney Sherman P Bowers said indictments would await session closure, with no details on the murder case against Andrew J. Peamroy and the death of his wife Mary Peamroy. Four witnesses were summoned for Wednesday, after which the extra session could end. A distant note mentions the term Eurasian fist used in India years ago.
Maryland reports show about 37 thousand people receive weekly unemployment benefits under the Maryland Unemployment Compensation Act. A best devil s food cake prize went to Mrs. Philip Rice with honorable mentions for two others. Judges included Mrs. Elsie Snosk Mrs. Merrii Ramsburg and Mrs. Everett Stull. A quilt display and future quilted items were noted, with two quilts donated by Miss Nettie Putman. The Mayorgan committee comprises several local residents.
Vida S Hildebrand was granted an absolute divorce from Harry Hildebrand. The lease was not contested. Vida S Hildebrand was represented by Patrick M Schnauffer. Harry Hildebrand must pay the costs of the case.
