The Genetic Dimension in Pregnancy Health
Adults planning families face gaps in genetic awareness among doctors. A 1975 National Academy of Sciences survey of 1000 physicians showed only 55.8 percent of pediatricians, 43.6 percent of family physicians, and 46.5 percent of obstetricians correctly assessed genetic defect frequencies. The piece urges informed patient questions, warns against dismissive doctors, and highlights risks such as Down syndrome and amniocentesis timing. The excerpt is from The Genetic Connected by Hen and Marks, 1978.
