Jobless Claims Rise in Maryland and National Rail Wages
Maryland unemployment claims climbed to 32,102 in April up 38 percent from March and 59 percent from April 1957, with unemployment benefits totaling 6.31 million dollars for the month. The report cited large one week layoffs in transportation equipment manufacturing and electrical machinery, and noted many claimants are eligible to refile as the new benefit year begins. In Britain the National Union of Railwaymen accepted a government wage offer ending a potential strike, with other rail unions also agreeing to a 3 percent raise effective June 30. Detroit car output rose to 86,600 this week, the highest in six weeks, Automotive News reported. In Frederick Maryland, City Treasurer Louis Eichelberger was involved in a traffic crash at South Market and All Saints streets that sent a pedestrian to Frederick Memorial Hospital with non life threatening injuries. A separate note describes a Mother-Daughter program at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown attended by about 200. A Venezuela police arrest group foiled a plot to kidnap Vice President Nixon, tying to the exiled Perez Jimenez regime. Memorial services for the late local ministers and a youth from Hanover were reported alongside other local notices.
