Life memberships spared from excise tax ruling in Maryland case
Baltimore May 15 Two Rockville residents won a ruling that life membership fees in a swimming pool club are not subject to federal excise taxes. Judge W Calvin Chesnut found the Twinbrook Swimming Pool Corp a non profit non stock entity formed in 1935 to run a community recreation facility, not a social club. The suit by Robert J and Clare McIntyre sought tax refunds on $25 taxes paid per member on memberships costing $125.
