Costello Begins Term After Surrender To Prison
Frank Costello, 65, surrendering to federal authorities to serve a five year tax evasion sentence, appeared nervous at the U S Marshal’s office with attorney Joseph Delaney Delaney. He had claimed a cancer outbreak to avoid imprisonment after his 1954 conviction for evading 28 532 in income taxes for 1948 and 1949 and a 20 000 fine. He previously fought the conviction at the Supreme Court while seeking treatment for a supposed cancer recurrence and faces immigration proceedings threatening his citizenship.
