Winter Wheat Crop Lowest Since 1872 in Maryland

Maryland's 1943 winter wheat crop was estimated at 4,952,000 bushels with 283,000 acres to harvest. April weather was cold with below normal rainfall and frequent strong winds drying soil, delaying growth and reducing yields to about 17.5 bushels per acre, below last year and the 10 year average. Rye acreage reached 20,000, the largest since 1934, with a 134 bushel indicated yield. Pastures stood 75 percent normal, alfalfa and clover harmed by winter conditions. Eggs produced by farm flocks reached 50 million in April, while milk per cow averaged 15.5 pounds.
