School Appropriation Cut Sparks State Budget Debate
Harrisburg May 15 Governor Stone disclosed his action on the general appropriation bill. He trimmed the school allotment by 500,000 and added 1,000,000 for public schools, saving 1.5 million to reduce the commonwealth floating debt. He filed a statement outlining his reasons for disapproving some items and approving others amid a push to balance revenues of about 41.6 million with education costs totaling more than 6 million annually. The governor argues the generous school fund has burdened the state and aims to cut the appropriation to 11,000,000, hoping prior legislatures' allocations can still be paid.
