Harp and Javelin Compare In Brooklyn Tabernacle Sermon
In a Brooklyn Tabernacle sermon Rev. Talmage contrasts harp and javelin using I Samuel texts. He links music to healing mental strain, notes Saul’s fury with a javelin, and extols music as medicine while warning against obstinacy. The address likens ancient instruments to therapeutic power in crisis.

Music as universal healer and warning in faith discourse
The essay argues music, sacred and secular, unites peoples and consoles the wounded, citing ancient and modern examples from Antioch to Waterloo. It praises hymns and concerted worship for moral reform, yet warns against music’s misuse and critics who silence it. It envisions a millennial harmony where song defeats vice and sustains virtue.
Javelins and Harp: A Lesson on Dodging Peril
A preacher argues that dodging unnecessary dangers protects virtue and duty. He compares David’s dodging of Saul’s javelin, Washington’s and Lincoln’s escapes, and Christ’s avoidance of mob violence to urge readers to avoid pointless risks while pursuing God’s truth. He criticizes javelin like attacks on the gospel and celebrates the healing power of the gospel harp.
