Mount St Marys to honor Surgeon General Novello at 185th graduation
Antonia C. Novello the Surgeon General will deliver the commencement address at Mount St. Marys College on May 23 as 413 degrees are awarded. She will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters along with three others. Bishop Curlin will give the baccalaureate Mass and receive an honorary degree afterward. More than 300 undergraduates and about 50 MBAs, plus seminary graduates, are part of the 413 degrees. The Knott Arena hosts the ceremonies with public attendance space available. Novello is the first woman and first Hispanic Surgeon General, with a long career at NIH and the Public Health Service advising on smoking, AIDS, nutrition, and immunization. Garraway and Geckle join her as honorary recipients, while Geckle plans to retire from PHH and spend time on his Baltimore County farm. Curlin, an auxiliary bishop, has focused on aid to the homeless and church outreach in Washington and Southern Maryland.
