New Market Barn and Hay Destroyed by Fire
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a 40 by 60 foot barn and about 25 tons of hay at New Market, valued around 3000 dollars. Mayor W Franklin Smith said neighbors notified him at 2 a.m., and fire units from New Market and Mt Airy assisted. The barn was electrically wired and insured. State Police sent an investigator to determine the cause. Later, a smoldering mattress at 117 Patrick St was extinguished after an earlier 3 a.m. alarm with minimal damage.
