Heavy Rains Benefit Flowers Crops and Lawns
The city and county received the heaviest rains since March, aiding gardens and maturing barley and wheat while replenishing dry water supplies. Measured at the airport and State Police barracks, rainfall approached an inch, with only light drizzle forecast to end by afternoon and a partly cloudy Sunday ahead. Unified Red Command Is NATO Rival in Warsaw
The Soviet Union and seven East European allies formed a unified military command to rival NATO with Marshal Ivan Konev as supreme commander. The pact unites eight nations under a single command for 20 years, with deputies from each country and a Moscow-based headquarters. The treaty aims to deter West Germany’s NATO entry and requires peaceful dispute resolution, while allowing collective defense if attacked. The agreement creates a legal framework for Soviet troops to remain in satellite states under a formal alliance.
