NATO Council Advice on Offshore Islands Sparks Debate
A NATO Council session drew sharp criticism for proposing ceding Chinese offshore islands to the Communists in exchange for a vague anti force pledge regarding Formosa. The move alarmed U S leaders and sparked questions about European allies countering Soviet pressure while the United States guards Asia from Communism. The column argues such talk undermines U S resolve and questions Western unity on Far East policy.
