Mayor Magaha announced a proposed 1971 72 city budget include a 10 percent pay rise for about 260 workers, with an 8.25 per hour minimum for those earning under 2.50. The raise would start July 1, without raising the tax rate, and many employees would see full 10 percent increases.
Local churches will ring bells Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. beginning with Frederick’s oldest bell at Visitation Convent. David Hagan and George T. Schroeder Jr. alternate carillon and chimes at venues, with student handbell performances at Evangelical Reform Church. The Cambridge English Handbell Ringers, directed by Mrs. Robert Emge, performs from three to ten inch bells, then travels to Moorehead, Kentucky for a national festival with the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, featuring nine other groups. Participants include William Graham, James Graham, Nancy Doll, Donna Blumenauer, Dale Blumenauer, Kathryn Brachey, Cheryl Routzahn, Jeffrey Brownlow, and Mark Ramsburg.
Western Maryland areas faced flash flood warnings from the U S Weather Bureau as rainfall neared an inch last night and today. Showers continued, with totals around 0.69 inches by morning, and a calm, sunny Friday expected. River readings showed Monocacy near normal plus slight rise, while Potomac at Point of Rocks ran high and murky. month rainfall total stands at 1.87 inches versus 3.91 normal.

Argo and Nischan were treated for cuts. vehicle damages were reported in the hundreds.
Within a 24 hour period ending at 10 am fire crews from Independence Juniors Uniteds and Citizens responded to a 6:24 pm smoke investigation along County Route 340 one half mile east of Route 17 a 11:08 am grass fire near Brunswick and a 6:46 pm hedge fire at the Catholic Church on North Church Street Thurmont. Ambulance calls totaled two emergencies and one routine with jail population listed as 17 males and one female.
Mayor Jess D. Orndorff and the Brunswick Council proclaimed June 1 to 5 as Clean Up America Project Days. Citizens are urged to cooperate with the Boy Scouts and the American Legion Post to beautify the area. The state American Legion Department joins the effort with the scouts and Pepsi-Cola Company. Elwood F. Wineholt, Frederick County Commander of the American Legion, requested the proclamation.
U S Senator Charles Mathias urged Congress on the Senate floor to accelerate designating Fort Detrick as the national cancer research facility linked to President Nixon’s goal of curing cancer. He warned delays could cost billions and lives, noting Fort Detrick’s unused capacity and $100 million in equipment ready to begin a national cancer program.
A U S casualty tally shows more than 22 000 American combat deaths since the Paris peace talks began three years ago. The weekly sum adds 34 deaths, the lowest in three months, with 221 wounded and four nonhostile deaths. Saigon reports 51 722 South Vietnamese killed. allies tally 394 659 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong deaths.
