Medicare Bill Boosts Social Security in Senate Proposal
The Medicare bill before the Senate would raise Social Security benefits by 7 percent across the board with retroactive pay starting in June. It expands child benefits to age 22 if in school, widows’ eligibility, and adds protections for divorced wives. The retirement test would be liberalized, allowing more earnings to count toward benefits.

New Social Security bill cuts benefit losses for middle earners
The proposal changes the earnings impact on benefits, with the first 1200 dollars of earnings reducing benefits at the current rate, then the next 1200 up to 2400 reducing at half the rate. A person earning 2000 would lose 550 now but only 400 under the bill. It also lowers eligibility for 72 year olds and over with three quarters of coverage and offers a new monthly benefit of 885 plus 175 for a wife, with widows of older men receiving 835.
