Weston to repeat walk Portland to Chicago in a month

Edward Payson Weston, the 68 year old pedestrian famed for the Philadelphia to New York record, plans to walk 1256 miles from Portland Maine to Chicago in about thirty days starting at 5 PM on Tuesday October 29. He aims to duplicate or surpass his 40 year old feat as reported by the New York Tribune.

Basket Island Purchase by Mrs Peary Wife of Arctic Explorer

Basbhet island in Portland harbor has been sold to Mrs Leary, wife of Commander Robert E Peary. The four acre island lies near Cousins Island and Bushy Clap board Island, close to the Casco Bay mainland. The price was $4000 and the purchaser may use it for a future purpose, retirement from basket picnic use suggested. Other notes include a plan for a sunken garden with electric lit flower beds at a Newport estate, and Oklahoma’s heavy rain and a damaging tornado near Grand Day county injuring several homes.

Talking chicken born from parrot and guinea hen cross

Clintoun H Wis, a Monterey Road rancher in San Jose, claims a cross between a parrot and a guinea hen has produced a talkable chicken. The fowl is a sixth generation cross with a parrot beak and opposite toe arrangement, currently limited to a few phrases including a swear word.

Pete the fighter dog earns irony in White House clash

President Roosevelt and French Ambassador Jusserand spar over a bull terrier named Pete. Jusserand says Pete is a poor fighter, while Roosevelt argues Pete is a splendid fighter but a poor judge of dogs. The dog, Bete, had recently been in hospital following an incident on White House grounds.

University Professor Dr J Allen Smith of Washington University warns classes against marriage amid high living costs in Seattle urging young people to wait for prices to drop. He says marriages may occur but only with Providence intervening to balance finances in the present unstable economy. In Des Moines a Brooklyn attorney Dr McKeeney, mentally exhausted from overwork, handed out banknotes on a Chicago train and gave a newsboy nineteen dollars for a nanear, and was taken into custody.
