At Memorial United Brethren Church on West Second Street yesterday morning Bishop E B Kephart preached in the main auditorium while Bishop Nicholas Castle spoke in the chapel. The church was crowded as the pulpit was decorated with palms and the choir was augmented.
The sermon centered on Zachariah and waters from Jerusalem, praising the church, with Bishop Kephart and others wielding emotion over Egypt and Greece travels. A large collection raised 1692 dollars, followed by postdedication to next Sunday. The afternoon session featured Bishop Hott on the heroes of the church and leaders like Otterbein and Boehm. Additional papers discussed education, the need for a cultured ministry, and the role of colleges in shaping religious leadership.
Centennial services in the City Opera House Saturday night featured Rev. H. A. Roop presiding. Rev. Dr Harris read Scripture and led prayers. Bishop Kephart gave the main address on the history and development of education in the church, lamenting hurried founding and distant locations of many colleges.
Dr Bookwalter of Western University argued that the small freshwater college will not vanish but form a connected system from kindergarten to university. Dr W M Bell urged missionary work and church college growth, raising 925 dollars to aid local debt before benediction by Rev A P Funkhouser.
A platform meeting at City Opera House discussed church renewal and the need to balance respect for past founders with future aims. Rev Funk and Dr T C Carter urged awakening, unity, and stronger religious outreach to reach a new era for the church.
Last night’s centennial program at City Hall drew Frederick visitors and residents to one of the largest audiences yet. W. B. H. Brighthill opened with a solo from Annville Pa, Rev. J. T. Roberts read scripture, Rev. F. P. Rosolat offered prayer, and a quartette sang. Dr. W. R. Funk spoke on publishing interests and the church’s life, noting literature’s influence on institutions and citing Homer, Paul, Napoleon, and past victories as inspiration. The talk tied to church communications via the Telescope and Watchword.
