A state and federal probe uncovers a hospital wide drug and security scandal in New Orleans. Eight people arrested as investigators link staff to forged prescriptions thefts and organized crime. Reports describe forged prescriptions and a doctor charged with buying a stolen ECG device amid chaotic security lapses.
State police assume security duties at Charity Hospital amid rising thefts and accusations of guards delivering marijuana to accomplices. Witnesses allege guards assist in loading stolen goods into cars and pimps smuggling prostitutes, with overcrowding blamed for ongoing issues.
Fires raced through lower Michigan over the weekend destroying about 13 660 acres of amber and brush. Fire supervisor Charles Bomaster said air fires were contained by Sunday. The worst blaze hit Roscommon County south of St Helen burning about 6 000 acres before control late Sunday. Sanderson was suspected in that fire as others began Friday in four places. Causes of the remaining blazes were not determined.
US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko will hold two days of talks in Vienna starting May 19 Austrian officials said Kreisky will delay his Romania visit to participate Kissinger slated to arrive May 18 with Gromyko arriving May 19.
RALEIGH AP The GOP will not target the South with a unique strategy for the 1976 election said GOP chairman Mary Louise Smith in North Carolina She dismissed talk of a conservative split within the party predicting Ford will build a broad appeal and that Reagan's tour does not prove a party rift She urged closer ties between party and campaigns and praised Gov James Holshouser as a strong NC leader.
A Department of Health, Education and Welfare study finds $500 million in erroneous payments by state and local officials and another $500 million due to recipient misreports in AFDC payments from January to June 1974. It notes 9.3 percent ineligible, 20.6 percent overpaid, and 41 or more underpaid. About $8 billion goes to 3 million AFDC families annually.
Two Soviet destroyers tied up at Commonwealth Pier Boston at 8:33 am as a US guided missile cruiser watched. In Leningrad hundreds gathered on the docks as American Navy vessels arrived for a first postwar exchange. The five day visit marks the Allied victory anniversary with salutes and band performances aboard both sides.
