Three British Destroyers Sunk By German Bombs
London May 12 The British Admiralty says three destroyers Lively Jackal and Kipling were sunk by German bombs in the eastern Mediterranean. Over 500 officers and men were saved with roughly 600 total believed for the three ships. The Lively was completed in 1940 and the other two in 1939. The attack followed by air combat left one Heinkel bomber destroyed and at least seven damaged.

London May 12. German occupation forces in the Netherlands executed 24 alleged leaders of a secret anti Nazi group. This raises the total Hollanders shot to 96 for alleged complicity in a plot to pave the way for an Allied invasion. The 24 were charged with espionage and possession of arms.

Former Local Youth Drowns In Canoe Mishap
Elmer Charles Crampton 18 of York Pa drowned Sunday afternoon in the Susquehanna River near York after a gust capsized the canoe he rode with Preston Naylor 17 and Lewis T Sowers 16. Naylor and Sowers survived and later helped recover Crampton’s body about an hour after the capsizing. Crampton was a machinist apprentice and a William Penn Senior High graduate. Funeral services are set for Thursday at the Shindler funeral home with burial in Greenmount cemetery.
