Walkersville and Frederick County cited for water rule violations
A Maryland Public Interest Research Group report found more than 20 municipalities, businesses and institutions in Frederick County violated federal drinking water regulations last year serving over 6,600 people. Walkersville, with 4,200 customers, faced the largest violations tied to surface water treatment rules, though town officials call it a technicality and say the water was not a health hazard. Mount St Mary’s College faces a similar issue as EPA rules evolve faster than upgrades.

After five motions failed, Frederick County commissioners approve an extra 539000 for the school board beyond state maintenance of effort. The board sought 18 million but funding narrowed from 1.8 million to 900000 before final approval.
Bridge spans Monocacy River to restore Walkersville line
The Walkersville Southern Railroad marked a milestone as a new bridge over the Monocacy River was completed, ending more than 20 years of disuse since Hurricane Agnes struck in 1972. Volunteers and state support funded a five mile line restoration from Frederick to Walkersville with a $500,000 Maryland DOT grant. The first trains crossed the river in mid March, and a May 23 rededication with remarks by former Gov. Schaefer is planned along with ongoing weekend excursions and special events through October.
