Congressman's AIDS death sparks debate
Nine term Rep Stewart McKinney of Connecticut died after battling AIDS, prompting tribute for his public service and controversy over reports that he may have contracted the illness through homosexual contacts rather than blood transfusions. The Washington Post faced sharp criticism from senators and others who argued the focus should remain on his legacy and aid for the disease. The paper defended its reporting as incomplete without confirming the doctor’s conjecture, while noting the widow did not object to publication.
