Penalties reduced in New Market for zoning violators
New Market Town Council voted to switch zoning violations from criminal offenses to municipal infractions with a $1 per violation per day fine administered by the Frederick County zoning administrator. Fines go to the town, not the state or county, starting May 29. The council also heard the Finance Committee’s budget plan proposing $69,140 in revenue and $56,550 in expenses, plus new fees for building permits and appeals, and a $3,000 contingency fund to cover unforeseen costs. Mayor Frank Shaw will advertise the budget May 2 ahead of a June 13 public hearing.
