Frederick County estimates show a 4 percent population rise to 113 969 as of January with 1 775 new housing units built in 1968 just shy of the 1973 peak. Net population increases per dwelling unit are 2 62 people, and 1974 activity suggests growth remains steady despite gas concerns.
Frederick Historic District Commission refused Gilbert's women's clothing store on East Patrick Street permission to install an aluminum awning citing non historic use of aluminum in the district. The panel noted support for replacing old doors at Winchester Hall with different materials but did not approve the awning. The commission continued Edith Font's related case and approved demolition rights for Del. Julien P. Delphey for two Ice Street structures with vacated land to be fenced and possibly planted before future construction.

President Carter and Soviet leader Brezhnev will hold their first summit June 15 to 18 in Vienna to sign the SALT II treaty aimed at capping the nuclear arms race, officials announced.
Rep Beverly Byron of Maryland opposed the gas rationing proposal amid a national display of votes. The House rejected the plan 159 to 246 while the Senate advanced it 58 to 39, with Byron citing equity concerns for rural drivers and强调 that Maryland should not receive less access to fuel than Washington, D.C.
Frederick City Treasurer Betty E. Rice explained that proposed water and sewer rate increases will not affect minimum users.
