Statehood Bill Loses As Hawaii Alaska Fail to Advance
Washington May 10 The House rejected the combined statehood bill for Hawaii and Alaska 218 to 170 sending it back to committee. Opposition from Speaker and leadership predicted to hinder separate measures. Senate action uncertain as debate cited noncontiguity to mainland. In a separate Baltimore case Judge Byrnes overturned a 30 day jail term for Thomas Moore, who drove the car that killed Edgar Kasson and injured another person in 1954.
