Flying telescope reveals Mercury secrets from Kuiper airborne observatory
At 41,000 feet aboard the Kuiper Airborne Observatory NASA scientists led by Ann Sprague of the University of Arizona captured 56 minutes of data on Mercury. The mission used a one meter telescope to identify minerals, suggesting Mercury has a thin crust over an iron core and less volcanic activity than Earth. The study, while promising, will require months of analysis to fully interpret the geology and history of the planet.
