Lee Harris, once a disruptive middle schooler, transformed after joining Maryland's Tomorrow at Frederick High. Now 17 with a 4.0 GPA and perfect attendance, he was named Frederick County's outstanding Maryland's Tomorrow student. He plans college, likely Towson, to study physical therapy.
Two men including the president of the Frederick County Covered Bridge Society were acquitted in Frederick County District Court of all charges tied to the August theft of a replica Loy's Station covered bridge model. Dean Fitzgerald and Doug Yingling were cleared of theft and trespassing, with Fitzgerald also acquitted of assault and battery. The incident arose after Barbot, who built the model with Dennis Da Silva, claimed the pair took it from his LeGore Bridge Road property. Barbot testified conflicts occurred, but the court found insufficient proof of wrongdoing.
The National Cancer Institute will close clinical services at the Regional Cancer Therapy Center and relocate them to Bethesda. Spokeswoman Kara Smigel said the decision, made at a closed National Cancer Advisory Board meeting, is final though timing is undecided with some final choices possibly by September. Frederick County Circuit Court judge Herbert L. Rollins Jr. sentenced Christopher Lee Luckfield, 20, of Dale City to 18 months in jail and two years probation after pleading guilty to two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence and one count of reckless driving. Luckfield admitted consuming beer and tested positive for marijuana, though link to day of crash could not be proved. Debra Lyn Kutch, 25, and Paul Andrew Curlings, 23, died when Luckfield’s truck ran a stop sign, struck their car, and went off a embankment near Point of Rocks.
