Support From Family Helps Elderly Live Longer Says Study
Washington report summarizes National Center for Health Statistics findings from a 42 000 household survey showing that over nine tenths of elderly people living alone had in person or phone contact with family or friends in the prior two weeks. The study notes higher social support links to lower mortality and highlights that about five million aged 65 plus live alone, skewing older and more often widowed. Women among the elderly living alone are notably poorer and overrepresented among urban street people.
