The California Court of Appeal granted Juan Corona a new trial citing defense lawyer Hawk for gross neglect and an insanity defense as the only viable option, while noting the evidence of Corona’s guilt remains overwhelming. Corona, 41, was convicted in 1973 for the machete slayings of 25 transient farm workers and is jailed at Soledad State Prison. His current attorney said Corona is very happy about the decision. Corona recruited transients to work for growers in Feather and Yuba River valleys, and authorities found edged weapons at his Yuba City home. Previously described by his priest as an exemplary father, Corona was later revealed to have paranoid schizophrenia. The court criticized Hawk’s conduct as an outrageous abrogation of professional standards, turning the trial into a farce.
