New tariff concessions by U S widen world trade
The United States announced sweeping tariff concessions with 17 Western nations, effective June 6, covering $419.3 million in foreign shipments, while maintaining duties on $558.3 million. In return, these governments will cut or hold rates on $1.357 billion of American products, including farm goods, chemicals, and machinery. The Torquay conference, spanning seven months, drew 34 nations and included Germany and Canada among the biggest beneficiaries, with concessions extendable to all countries. The Senate debates a bill to deny tariff concessions to Communist nations.
