Registration for gasoline rationing will occur 2 to 3 p m on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday at elementary schools city and countywide. Superintendent Eugene W Pruitt urges motorists to arrive by 3 or 3 30 to avoid disrupting school work.
Washington May 9 tentative revisions to the eastern seaboard gasoline rationing program would exempt about 57 counties across Pennsylvania New York Virginia Maryland and Florida and all of West Virginia except eight counties. The plan would cut excluded counties in New York by ten Pennsylvania by twenty six Maryland by one Virginia by ten and Florida by ten. West Virginia would keep Mineral Grant Pendleton Hardy Morgan Berkeley and Jefferson counties. Excluded counties include New York Monroe Livingston Allegany Orleans Genesee Wyoming Cattaraugus Erie Niagara Chautauqua Potter Clinton Clearfield Cambria Somerset Fayette Westmoreland Indiana Jefferson Elk McKean Cameron Warren Forest Clarion Armstrong Erie Crawford Venango Butler Mercer Lawrence Beaver Allegheny Washington Greene Garrett Bland Smyth Washington Russell Tazewell Buchanan Dickinson Wise Scott Lee Jackson Calhoun Gulf Bay Washington Holmes Walton Okaloosa Santa Rosa Escambia.
The Eighth Naval District announced the first Gulf of Mexico appearance of very fast submarines guided by officers familiar with shallow waters, and the loss of two merchant vessels. A medium US vessel and a small Honduran ship were attacked Wednesday afternoon and evening. One was sunk by a torpedo, the other set afire by shells and abandoned. No lives were lost among 87 crew plus six passengers aboard.
Seven Axis planes were destroyed over Malta and eastern Libya in air battles, an RAF communique reported today. The report notes ongoing air operations and the RAF loss of several aircraft while engaging Axis forces.
May 9 dispatch reports that after a sea battle off northeast Australia the Japanese invasion threat to the continent was halted temporarily as U S forces secured New Caledonia and Port Moresby. New Delhi May 9 continued withdrawal of British forces in central Burma has been carried out successfully without contact with Japanese, a communique said. Japanese bombers attacked Chittagong coast for second time in 24 hours as the last Imperial forces in Chindwin Valley fell back toward Indian frontier for a stand near Mandalay. An aerial assault caused little military damage but may have casualties among refugees. no land-contact with invaders reported. Chittagong, near the Bay of Bengal, 165 miles northwest of Akyab, is a rail and port center in a key area of Japanese India invasion plans.
London May 9 Big British bombers attacked the Nazi aircraft works at Warnemunde Rostock with low level raids leaving the plant in flames. The RAF reported heavy anti aircraft fire and intense defense as Goering faces raids aimed at crippling Germanys air force bases and aircraft plants.
Tickets sold at a premium for a Civilian Defense meeting at Frederick High School featuring war gas instruction and a film about bombings in England. About 1000 OCD units are expected to attend. the film titled Warning depicts incendiaries, blasts, and air battles over London. Simon Clopper of the University of Maryland Fire Extension Service will present the gas instruction, previously given at the high school.
Chinese press hails the Coral Sea naval victory as Allied success and reports a strong Japanese bid to cut the Australia United States line was crushed. Sao Tang Pao notes the democratic world had awaited this news since Japan was bombed April 18.
The Soviet news agency reports German troops used mines with poison gas on May 7 at the Crimean front. Affected personnel suffer respiratory issues as Moscow notes the incident may be an experiment. Pravda carried the dispatch below yesterday's communiques from the Soviet information bureau.

Baltimore May 9 State police superintendent Col Beverly Ober said the force is badly undermanned and shall have double the present manpower He announced a call for 40 new recruits to augment 141 and asked the legislature to boost to 350 Ober added We could use 2 001 men Our peacetime strength calls for 350 and we are the most effective communicating police agency in the state. We must have new men immediately.
London reports a motor highway across Lake Ladoga froze last winter saved besieged Leningrad from mass starvation and kept a vital Soviet front anchor. The Moscow radio claimed an emergency link and possibly a double track railway across the ice. Germans suffered over 60 000 casualties on the Leningrad front in March and April.
Allied Headquarters reports a clear naval victory in the Coral Sea with light U.S. losses. MacArthur says Tokyo’s damage claims are false and fantastic as U.S. warships and bombers pursue the retreating Japanese fleet. The battle marks a major Allied effort to blunt Japan’s southward drive and defend Australia.
A Fort Myer cavalry unit led by Lieut. General Jonathan M. Wainwright halted at the Fair Grounds overnight about four or five years ago. The tall officer met Frederick residents while the force stayed roughly 24 hours. Wainwright then commanded at Fort Myer and later became a prisoner of war after the Bataan and Corregidor defense.
