An advertisement extols Vinci as a tonic to prevent grippe and hasten recovery. It claims Vinci strengthens the body, wards off winter illness, and reduces after effects. A traveling agent from Phenix Mutual Life Insurance Co. endorses it and guarantees refunds if not proven effective.
Guatemala City reports a major quake April 18 that toppled walls and trapped residents. Hundreds of deaths and many injured reported as fires and floods worsened the disaster. In Cork, Prince Henry of Prussia and the Duke of Connaught opened the Cork International Exhibition. Dr Gustav Weber, famed Cleveland surgeon and ex US consul at Hamburg, suffered a paralytic stroke during a Medical Association banquet.
London reports the Associated Press secured provisional agreements for acquisition of the White Star Dominion American and Atlantic Transport Lines. Vendors Ismay Laurie & Co Mills Co Widener Griscom Bernard Baker to receive 120 million in stock and 50 million in collateral trust bonds. The corporation may take or decline any line delivered by December 21, 1902, if less than three fourths interest is delivered.

Roddam was nearly wrecked with 17 crew dead and the captain severely burned. the Roraima is listed as lost with all aboard.
New York May 9 Mrs Hettie Green known financier has been granted a permit to carry three revolvers by the city police department. The permit was issued on the recommendation of Captain Steph O Brien of Lennard Street and applies to cities where she conducts business.
New York novelist Paul Leicester Ford was shot by his brother Malcolm W Ford in their East Liberty Street residence after a demand for money was refused. Malcolm then killed himself, with both men dying instantly. Mrs Hall and Miss Hart witnessed the scene as police noted the act stemmed from a long feud over inheritance and athletic career disputes.
