Maryland governor unveils six lane Kent Narrows bridge plan

Gov Harry Hughes announced a $72 million Eastern Shore upgrade including a six lane high level bridge over Kent Narrows and six lane widening from east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to US routes 50 and 301. Design work and land acquisition will take about three years with full project cost rising to around $72 million. The plan preserves the existing drawbridge as service roads and aims to reduce summer backups for beach traffic while allowing drawbridge openings on demand for marine traffic.

Baltimore braces for record summer tourist crowds

Baltimore officials report a renaissance drawing visitors from across the region. In 1981 last year saw 6.3 million visitors spending about 500 million, with forecasts of 5 to 6 percent national tourism gain and 15 percent more local tourists. Tall ships and proximity to major cities boost inquiries, walk-ins up 300 percent, and extended center hours reflect growing interest.
