Frederick plans a new graffiti and vandalism ordinance to cover policy enforcement and the cost of crimes. City Attorney Lynn Beard notes courts must back actions, as graffiti serves as a vandal’s signature and removal should be immediate. The proposal would require property owners to remove markings or let the city paint over at cost.
A Frederick County man, Gregg Charles Burns, 75, of Thurmont, died Monday afternoon in a single vehicle crash on Baugher Road near Lewistown. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy First Class Thomas Henry of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Continued on Page A.
Retired Lt. Col Samuel R Dorsey former barrack commander of the Maryland State Police in Frederick died Friday at Frederick Health Center He was 72 and lived at 3851 W Watersville Road Mount Airy He was born December 24 1923 in Ridgeville son of Roland Albert and Nellie Norwood Dorsey He attended Forest Park High School and served as a military policeman with the 5th Division in the European Theater earning several decorations including two European Theater stars
Frederick County Democrat Sue Hecht expected to join the House Appropriations subcommittee on the capital budget Speaker Casper Taylor Jr. said he would place her on the panel that allocates hundreds of millions yearly. Hecht, the area’s sole Democratic lawmaker supporting two pro football stadium deals, says the move reflects geographic balance and her broad view rather than a payback.
Frederick County Commissioner David Gray urged raising taxes to cover more than 5.7 million dollars in budget appeals. He floated raising the property tax rate from 2.26 to fund the school board request and suggested options including transfer taxes, recordation taxes, and increasing the county income tax, with various legal and fiscal caveats. Commissioner Terre Roy Rhoderick supported a transfer tax, while President Mark Hoke opposed property tax and income tax increases and favored higher impact fees.
WALKERSVILLE The town crowns John Leonard Thompson Jr as burgess defeating Brenda T. Davis and Clyde Berger. Commissioners include incumbents Joseph Cahn Ralph Whitmore and James Edwin Reid Deborah Zimmerman Chad W Weddle. Thompson succeeds Orley R Bourland Jr who has led the town.
In Mt Airy, three council members won four more years as 388 residents cast ballots. William Wagner led with 335 votes, Norman Hammond 314, and David Pyatt 306, while challenger Marcum Nance earned 123 votes. Hammond praised the teamwork and continued service.
WALKERSVILLE In Pied Piper style Alice Nemissas fed a frisky group of elementary students around a pond and to the nature center. The park naturalist at Fountain Rock Nature Center educates visitors about the outdoors and shared experiences from a recent Amazon River trip. She spent 244 weeks in the main forest and said travel is the best kind of educating.
